Snorkeling Anyone?

So, one of the things that you can add to your list of things to learn is snorkeling! Yes, with so many beautiful beaches here in the Treasure Coast you have to take some time to explore the ocean and all of it’s glorious sights. The video above was shot off of Hobe Sound Beach in August and as you can see the water is spectacular. I like to go early in the morning when the ocean is very calm. Flat water is perfect for seeing a wide variety of fish and corals. When the ocean is rough it stirs up the sand and also increased the currents, which makes it a real workout.  No one likes to fight a strong current and if your not in shape you could get into trouble. If you have never experienced snorkeling before bathtub beach is a great place to start, as the coral reef breaks the waves and provides for a better environment for children and beginners.

You can also free dive and catch lobster here during the months when catching is allowed. Yes, I said lobster. One of my favorite things to do is chase down a Florida Spiny Lobster. It does take a little practice but loads of fun to try and master the art. And if you didn’t know,  we have a stone crab season as well, but I would not try to man handle a stone crab. They have a powerful grip and could cut right through your finger and of course a visit to the hospital is no fun. We use stone crab “traps” to catch those little buggers. You do have to get a Florida fishing licence with a crawfish stamp in order to catch the tasty crustaceans and the Florida Fish and Wildlife officers will be out in force checking you for sure. The fine is pretty hefty, so I would make absolutely sure you are compliant with minimum slot sizes and up to date licencing.
