Cruising on Indian River Drive – In the Treasure Coast

Indian River Drive

One of my favorite things to do as a Treasure Coast resident is to take a leisurely drive along the Indian River. I can literally feel the stress leave my body and I quickly forget about my “to do” list as I travel long this beautiful stretch of water. The pace is slow, steady and there are no stop lights on Indian River Drive.

Indian River Drive is a two-lane road that runs from Stuart Florida all the way into Fort Pierce Florida. And what I like most about this stretch of road is that it makes you feel like you have stepped back in time. There are no big commercial buildings or high rises. Nothing but palm trees, sand and beautiful homes.

Living along the drive provides for a laid-back tropical feel and many of the home sites do have water footage directly in front of the property. Some waterfront homes have long finger piers where you could dock a boat, or just throw a fishing line. As you drive along the road you will see many home owners have small private beaches sprinkled with beach chairs, umbrellas and Tiki huts.

Many people looking for waterfront homes with land like this area of Martin and St Lucie County. Most lots allow for enough space to store a boat, RV or numerous automobiles. I would venture to say at least half of the properties long the drive has at least an acre of land, however, many property owners have subdivided their lots for profit.

You will find as you drive along this road there are both large estates and some very modest properties as well. I will also mention that there is no home owner’s association, so property owners have the freedom to do as they wish on their home sites. And while no HOA provides for some nice advantages, you must also take the good with the bad. No one can force your neighbor to power wash his driveway or prune his palm trees. So, as you drive along this road you will see it can be the wild west.

I find the homes along the river to be refreshing with a wide variety of choices letting people live in a less restricted atmosphere. If you are looking for something off the beat-n-path with the ability to let your hair down this is certainly a place to consider.
